SUMMARY:Integrated Pest Management for the Home Garden
DESCRIPTION:with Adam Romero  \nAdam thinks a lot about pesticides. He is an Associate Professor at the University of Washington Bothell where he researches the histories of agriculture and industrial chemicals. Adam has been a Master Gardener for 13 years and strives to grow as much food as possible at his house in the Cascade foothills. \nThis presentation explores the basics of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) for the home garden. IPM is a scientific ecosystem level approach to manage pests in a more sustainable manner. The talk covers philosophical aspects of IPM alongside practical strategies and measures that home gardeners can take to reduce pest populations. \n  \nJoin us via Zoom?  To attend\, please register via the meeting registration form. We will email you with a reminder and the Zoom link for the meeting as the date approaches. \n\n\n\nMissed it?  Click to see the recording till May 2026

SUMMARY:Sick tree? Don’t panic! CE and ICMGF meeting
DESCRIPTION:Sick tree? Don’t panic!  \nSick\, dying\, and dead trees can be quite alarming to property owners and induce panicked calls to tree care professionals. Pests and pathogens are often the first assumption\, along with an assumed urgent need for pesticide application. This presentation will address common reasons why trees decline and die (with a focus on native trees in small forest and home landscape contexts)\, why pesticides are often not a good response\, the importance of a holistic approach\, and the importance of good communication and “bedside manner” to manage client expectations and be sensitive to the emotions associated with tree health problems \nwith Instructor Kevin Zobrist \nKevin is a professor with Washington State University Extension\, where he has been a faculty member since 2007. Kevin is based in Snohomish County and coordinates the Extension Forestry program in the Puget Sound area\, working with people who own forested property. Kevin has two forestry degrees from the University of Washington. His research interests include forestry education\, forest health and ecology\, and native trees. Kevin is also a Certified Forester and author of the book Native Trees of Western Washington. \nJoin us via Zoom. To attend\, please register via the meeting registration form. We will email you with a reminder and the Zoom link for the meeting as the date approaches. Thank you. \n\n\n\nClick Here to view the video

SUMMARY:The Secret Life of the Amazing Apple
DESCRIPTION:The Secret Life of the Amazing Apple is presented by Dr. Eric Curry. \nWhat do you know about the peel of an apple? Is it just something to be removed before filling a pie or so much more? Come learn the protective functions of apple skins and the aberrations that are clues to the fruit’s stresses and health\, which are key to properly caring for our apple trees. \nDr. Eric Curry\, who received a PhD in Plant/Physiology/Horticulture from Washington State University\, was a Research Plant Physiologist at the USDA Agricultural Research Service in Wenatchee\, Washington for 33 years. During this time\, he authored over 120 journal publications\, collaborating with entomologists\, pathologists\, and horticulturists throughout the world. He is the leading world authority on physiological disorders of apple fruits in arid climates. In 2003\, as President of the Plant Growth Regulation Society of America\, he presided at a joint international meeting with The Japanese Society for Chemical Regulation of Plants in Vancouver\, BC. In 2006\, Dr. Curry presented the Keynote address at the Tenth International Symposium on Plant Bioregulators in Fruit Production.

SUMMARY:Meadowcraft: The Alchemy and Science of Creating and Maintaining Native Wildflower Meadows
DESCRIPTION:While the Pacific Northwest is famous for vast forested landscapes\, expansive and sunny wildflower meadows once occupied tens of thousands of acres in a thin linear band extending from British Columbia to Northern California. Largely erased from contemporary memory\, these regional “prairies” were biologically supercharged with pollinators and grassland birds\, aesthetically captivating\, and a primary source of staple human foods. This presentation will excavate some of that history and present contemporary models for meadow restoration and management – including in rural\, residential\, and urban landscapes – locations where meadows are actively replacing lawns and bringing life back to biological wastelands. \nEric Lee-Mäder is an insect ecologist with the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation\, a principal at Northwest Meadowscapes\, and author of various books\, including the recently released The Milkweed Lands (Storey Publishing). He is based in Port Townsend and farms on Whidbey Island. \nSee the Class Video: Meadowcraft

SUMMARY:Managing Soil Functions for Productive\, Healthy Environments
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Doug Collins will discuss the importance of soils and how soil organisms encourage healthy soils. He will also discuss the effects of soil amendments and other management practices on soils. \nDoug Collins is an Extension Professor and Soil Scientist with WSU’s Center for Sustaining Agriculture and Natural Resources. Doug has a Ph.D. in soil science from Washington State University and an M.S. in Plant Pathology from Montana State University. He focuses on managing and monitoring soil fertility on diverse organic vegetable farms\, composting systems\, and evaluating soil quality in different vegetable cropping systems\, including organic reduced tillage. Doug is also interested in soil variability across landscapes and biological indicators of soil quality. He has consulted on composting\, organic waste management\, and soil health in the Dominican Republic and Colombia and currently serves on the Board of Washington Organics Recycling Council and the WSDA Organic Program.

SUMMARY:Crevice Gardening for Neophytes
DESCRIPTION:Crevice gardens are a distinctive form of traditional rock gardens\, as they emulate alpine rock environments where plants grow in small crevices between upright slabs of rock. A team of Master Gardeners designed and built two crevice gardens at the Education Garden at Greenbank Farm. This presentation describes their experience at each step of the process\, showing how anyone can take advantage of this increasingly popular type of garden that supports biodiversity and water conservation.

SUMMARY:Helping Bees in the Offseason
DESCRIPTION:Pollinators have been getting lots of press in recent times\, thanks to increasing awareness of their importance in our ecosystem. Pictures of buzzing bees in summer gardens are widespread. But what about the rest of the year – the early spring and fall – before and after the height of the blooming season? Lisa will discuss food\, water\, and habitat needs for bees in the offseason. Learn why bees need your help\, what types of bees you will find in your garden\, and the plants that will help them thrive. \n\n\n\nLisa Phillips is a Master Gardener and a beekeeper whose bees have pollinated plants all over Whidbey Island.
